Gaze is inspired by the City of Pasadena's long history and dedication to research in space exploration. Through the lens of science and technology, the artwork speaks to the vastness and complexity of the universe and the interaction of time relating to space exploration. Immersing visitors with refractions of light, color, and shadows, the sculptural forms take influence from drawings of biological discoveries from the late 1800s and imagery taken by the Hubble Space Telescope of the Orion Nebula—a beautiful flowing cloud of gas and dust. The work changes with shifting perspectives and time of day as shadows and refractions of color are cast throughout the site.
When the community and visitors view the artwork from street level, looking upwards, they will have a sense of gazing up into deep space at an undulating nebula mesh form and translucent constellation-like sculptures.
